Loskutik and the Cloud

musical tale for children by B. Tchaikovsky
  • Dmitry Otyakovsky
    stage director
The musical fairy tale Loskutik and the Cloud, familiar to many from childhood through the vinil record of the same name, is not an easy work to translate into the theatrical language. The metaphorical plot and the abundance of fantastic scenes had to be embodied in a chamber stage, not equipped with complex machinery. In addition, the dramaturgy also had to be reworked: the spoken scenes had to be shortened, the musical numbers had to be recomposed, etc.

The optimal directorial solution was a plot superstructure — the story of the orphan girl who tamed a cloud turned into a school essay, completed one by one by the family members of the boy who had gone to bed. The fantastical scenes were created with the help of video mapping technology: the walls of the Prokofiev Hall of the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theater became the screen for the content.
