La Boheme
opera by G. Puccini
  • Dmitry Otyakovsky
    stage director
Dmitry Bertman, the artistic director of the Helikon Opera theater, came up with an experimental project, inviting four directors to stage four acts of Puccini's La Boheme. I got the second act — a celebration in the Latin Quarter. My scenography with set designer Irina Sid transferred the action to a nightclub full of revelers and neon lights.

The interaction of the four directors has become a special feature of this production. Despite everyone's desire to create a unique concept, we had to create a unified story with end-to-end dramaturgy and logic of character development. Fortunately, despite the heated discussions in the rehearsal process, we managed to create a performance that combines the difference of directorial approaches and a coherent narrative.
