Moscow, Cheryomushki
operetta by D. Shostakovich
  • Dmitry Otyakovsky
    stage director
Moscow, Cheryomushki is the only operetta among Dmitry Shostakovich's works. It tells about the misfortunes of the tenants of a new building, cheated by the building manager Barabashkin, who cheats on their housing in favor of his boss and his young wife. A film was made in 1962 based on the operetta, and it is staged at the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky Theaters.

Our interpretation took the action of the operetta into the world of a special service with the difficult-to-pronounce name Goskomtransvremkontrrevister. The State Committee for Trans-Time Counterrevolutionary Extermination in the distant year 2070 is engaged in eliminating temporal anomalies, and its agents, Masha, Bubentsov, Koretsky, Baburov and Lidochka, are sent back in time to save Moscow from a housing crisis. In the process of the assignment the time machine fails and for a time sends the agents to the XVII century, but after all the trials, the heroes are waiting for a happy end.

The play was included in the long list of the National Theater Award Golden Mask in 2022.
